They Came For Me
They came for the Communists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Communist;
They came for the Socialists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Socialist;
They came for the labor leaders, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a labor leader;
They came for the Jews, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Jew;
Then they came for me - And there was no one left to object.
--Martin Niemoller, German Protestant Pastor, 1892-1984
This video is a compelling illustration of the pain and pointlessness of discrimination. We
are watching it primarily, though, to see this teacher use propaganda to further her agenda.
We see that it is devestatingly effective with both children and adults in a very short time
period. This teacher's agenda was for the greater good -- she wanted children and adults
to experience and participate in discrimination at a visceral level so that those involved would
"know in their bones" that it is wrong.
To make sure that discrimination took place in the classroom, the teacher used propaganda to portray one group as inferior to another. We have examples of Hitler doing the same thing, using propaganda to discredit and humiliate Jews and others. By seeing how effective the teacher's propaganda was in one day, we can imagine how effective Hitler's propaganda was, day in day out for years, with the power of the government behind it. Using propaganda is one way to encourage others to discriminate.
Durant 5th graders know that one of the marks of an educated person is the ability to evaluate
information and sources of information for truth, accuracy, validity, bias, prejudice, and propaganda.

"But the most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly and with unflagging attention. It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over." -- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, p. 184
"The purpose of propaganda is not to provide interesting distraction for blasé young gentlemen, but to convince… the masses. But the masses are slow moving, and they always require a certain time before they are ready even to notice a thing, and only after the simplest ideas are repeated thousands of times will the masses finally remember them." -- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, p. 185
