Dear Parent,

Be on the lookout for an online book review.  Your child will soon be a published blogger.

What is blogging?  Short for weblog, a blog is like an online diary.   http://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/blogs/

Blogging - authoring a blog, maintaining a blog, or adding an article to an existing blog

Blog Posts/Posts/Entries - individual articles on a blog

Blogger - person who posts these entries

Our blog will focus on classroom related topics (reading and math and science and social studies) and specials related topics (books and reading, art, music, sports, language, theater, technology.)

Today's students were born in a digital world.  Many are out there making their mark without any guidance. With this blog we will begin to set standards for your child’s digital life: safe practices; courtesy; common sense and effective communication; online reputation.

Kidblog is a safe way to start interacting in the digital world.  The site is private - password protected, open only to DRES students, parents, and teachers.

As with any new adventure, we need to be aware of the risks, to avoid them.

Here are some common sense practices for parents and students.

  • Adult supervision of all computer time is important.
  • Parent supervision is advised and required.  Kidblog has a special code just for parents.
  • We will use kind and courteous words with each other
  • We will use only first names or initials
  • We will not share private information (address or phone/cell numbers)
  • Online work is an extension of the classroom.  We will use proper grammar and spelling.

Written communication skills are important to your child's future.  For some, thinking, planning, writing is a chore. But technology is candy to our kids.  With Kidblog, students can have fun polishing their writing skills while learning to be good digital citizens.

                                                                                                             Sincerely,

                                                                                                             Ms. Hinton
