Our Natural Science Collection (The 500's) has an average publication date of 2002. It is recommended that science books be no more than 5 years older than the current date. That is not a realistic (or easily achievable) goal in a school of our size and age and with our budgetary constraints.
The 500s cover a broad range of topics from mathematics, to physical science, life science, and earth science. Books in this classification support many areas of the curriculum from force and motion, sound, planets, plants, weather, the water cycle, rocks and minerals, habitats, and animal life. The 500s comprise 11.5% of the total collection, which is the largest block after fiction.
We have made progress with the age of the collection. Breaking it down by subject area: Astronomy, Chemistry, Life Sciences and Biology moved from an average copyright date of 1998 to 2003. Medical Science is now 2004.

2013 Focus
Media Advisory Committee
The committee elected to concentrate funding to revive one “section” of the collection at a time each year, rather than dispersing funds broadly over the entire collection.
The library book budget of $5000 was spent on biographies. To narrow choices from the $40,000 Wake County Opening Day book list teachers specified the purchase of books about inspirational figures, women, minorities, artists, inventors, scientists, authors. Final selection was based on favorable reviews in School Library Journal and Hornbook.
